Raynald Levesque's book should have at least some of what you're looking for.

If you are getting this book, get the current edition from the IBM Analytics website.  Ray has not been involved with the book for many years.  However, it is not really about the issues Bozena listed.  It is more about Python and R programmability and SAS-SPSS equivalents.  Still worth reading.

Although if the OP doesn't want all the probrammability stuff, the 1st or 2nd
edition might be more suitable.  From the link I gave:

"3rd Edition, updated for SPSS 14. Download: PDF. The 3rd edition is
substantially different from earlier editions, as 50% of the book is
dedicated to the Python integration."

That old material may still be covered there - the book grew, but V14 is 11 or so releases ago, and lots of things have changed.

Re: good basic SPSS practices resources?

John F Hall

For questionnaire surveys there are some implied guidelines contained in the tutorials on my page:

Block  1: From questionnaire to SPSS saved file

 http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/summary-guide-to-spss-tutorials.html

See especially:

1.1.3 Introduction to the use of computers in survey analysis

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/1.1.3__introduction_to_the_use_of_computers_in_survey_analysis.pdf

1.3.3.9 Some general advice on file building in SPSS

 http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/1.3.3.9__some_general_advice_on_file_building_in_spss.pdf

For elementary level data entry:

The Beginners’ [Clods’ ] Guide to Survey Analysis Using SPSS , might be useful

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/the_beginners_clods__guide_to_survey_analysis_using_spss.pdf

together with accompanying slide-shows:

https://www.academia.edu/9157058/Clods_Guide_slide-show_1

https://www.academia.edu/9157153/Clods_Guide_slide-show_2

For basic recoding see:

2.3: Data transformations

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/23-data-transformations.html

. . and (very elementary) scale building:

3.5: Derived variables (COUNT and COMPUTE)

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/23-data-transformations.html

A warning to everyone in how not to derive attitude scales is:

SPSS files for British Social Attitudes 32 (2011): a cautionary tale for the unwary

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/spss_files_for_british_social_attitudes_32__2011__a_cautionary_tale_for_the_unwary.pdf

Survey researchers in UK and Europe are slowly beginning to adopt common conventions for their SPSS files (e.g. use of negative user-missing values) but there is a long way to go before a full set of agreed protocols emerges.  On my site there are introductions to, and commentaries on, the design, structure and presentation of SPSS *.sav files for major surveys distributed by the UK Data Service, UKDS [ https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/ ] and other archives.

Commentaries include:

Understanding Society 2010

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/notes_on_bhps_and_understanding_society_2.pdf

National Well-being (UK Office for National Statistics)

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/ons-national-well-being.html

Commentary on SPSS file for British Social Attitudes 2011

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/comments_on_the_distributed_spss_file_for_british_social_attitudes_2011.pdf

Notes on British Social Attitudes 2004 teaching data set

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/uploads/2/9/9/8/2998485/notes_on_bsa_2004_marsh_and_elliott.pdf

British Social Attitudes: Exploring the SPSS files

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/british-social-attitudes-8203exploring-the-spss-files.htmlhttp://surveyresearch.weebly.com/british-social-attitudes-8203exploring-the-spss-files.html

Accounts of the tremendous work involved in reconciling metadata from different waves of the same survey are on page:

British Social Attitudes 1983 to 2014: Cumulative SPSS file

http://surveyresearch.weebly.com/british-social-attitudes-1983-onwards-cumulative-spss-file.html which has links to eleven separate commentaries covering type conflicts, measurement levels, missing values, variable and labelling, multiple response.

Hope this helps

May I suggest searching the archives for Author: Kendall
and the word practice.

I have been meaning to pull that stuff into one document, but alas there are
only 24 hours in a day.

The book is based on SPSS 11 so some of her syntax examples are by now
rather dated, and SPSS has largely superseded them, but  her logic and
method remain valid and relevant.  Has she thought about a new edition?  In
private correspondence a few years ago, she said yes (with SPSS 18!)
preferably with much larger, and real, data sets: also, despite her
reservations about different operational environments, some actual
screenshots?

After all the other SPSS books I've reviewed, it was like a breath of fresh
air: clear and concise, nicely written and presented, and I finished it in
two sittings (in preference to John Le Carré!).    It's absolutely
wonderful: I have always been considered (by others) an expert in SPSS,
having been a user, consultant and teacher since 1972, but I learned a few
things from this book, some new, some better explained than in manuals or by
the experts on the SPSSX-Listerver.  There's far more coverage than in other
books and I particularly like the approach of posing data-management and
research problems and situations before launching into SPSS syntax.  The
author has clearly worked on dozens if not hundreds of different data sets
for different clients and/or students and comes across as a rare kindred
spirit.

I have often harped on "quality assurance" and "good practice" "good
practices"  etc. Sorry I did not pre-test the search

Re: good basic SPSS practices resources?

Robert L
Another source I like is "Take good care of your data" by Sven Juel et al (http://www.epidata.dk/downloads/takecare.pdf). Not updated to cover later versions of the software, but since it is oriented towards basic data management practices, most of the content is still valid. Describes SPSS and Stata procedure in parallel.
