Shortcuts

Ron0z
I’ve noticed something in my new installation of ver25. I’ve been on ver22
for some time. I use Windows.

A standard short cut in Windows is ctrl-A. In Word, Excel, file manager (and
most any other software) it selects everything (ie. All). Another handy one
is ctrl-shift-Home or ctrl-shift-End to select everything upward or downward
from the cursor position. Ctrl-Home and ctrl-End were useful too for moving
to the top or bottom.

So, in my old ver22 installation, in the Syntax Editor, I used
ctrl-shift-Home to highlight the code from the cursor point to the top of
the file. I was then real easy to do a ctrl-R to run the selected code. It
was quick and easy. However, in my new ver25 that shortcut doesn’t work.
Curiously, ctrl-shift-End works as expected. Is there something in the set
up that needs to be turned on (or off)?

The ctrl-Home and ctrl-End behave strangely too. Both shortcuts will work
taking you to the top or bottom, but once only. However, it’s only the
ctrl-End that actually moves the cursor. The ctrl-Home moves the view to the
top of the file, but no editing can take place until you click the mouse
somewhere.

If anyone can advise as to how to bring these shortcuts back into action I’d
appreciate it, ctrl-shift-Home in particular or an equivalent that does the
same.

These shortcuts work on my system, which is 25 with fixpack1.  There is now a fixpack2 for 25.  So install the latest fixpack and see if it works.

Also, take a look at Edit > Syntax keyboard shortcuts from aSyntax Editor window to see a whole bunch of new ones.

Related: Is there a mailing list or alert list to be on when SPSS releases a
new version or fix pack? I am on several and following on Twitter but this
was the first I learned of FP2.

I too only learned about availability of FP2 (for SPSS 25) when someone
mentioned it in another recent post to this forum.  If there is an alert
list, the IT folks at my university are not on it:  They typically only
become aware of FP availability when I alert them to it!  Just having
someone from IBM post an alert to this forum would be helpful.

Cheers,
Bruce

IBM has never been very good about notifying end users who don't have a support contract about updates.   The Subscription and new UI versions do have built-in update checks and notifications.  But the IBM Predictive Analytics Community, https://developer.ibm.com/predictiveanalytics/, does have announcements of updates.

The Downloads section has a link to Fixpacks.
You can look for fixpacks all the way back to version 19.0.0.0 across all supported platforms, which is approximately when IBM acquired SPSS.

The fixpacks list for V25 is here.

Re: Shortcuts

Fixpack2 is installed and I’m ‘over the moon’ with it. I can use ctrl-Home
and ctrl-End too, as well as ctrl-shift-Home. Thank you.

The experience made me laugh, though. To get access from IBM I had to log
into their system, and I’d forgotten my password. It should have been simple
process. And it was. So long as I responded to the automated email within
30mins. The trouble was that it took about 40mins for the email to get to
me. It worked in the end.

Re: Shortcuts

Keeping Stata up to date, by way of contrast, is MUCH easier.  If one has an
internet connection, one can type the following two commands:

  update all
  adoupdate, update

The first command updates all "official" Stata commands for the user's
version.  The second updates all user-written programs the user has
installed.  To see what's new (in official Stata), one can then issue this
command:

  help whatsnew

For more info, see:

https://stats.idre.ucla.edu/stata/icu/updating/
https://www.stata.com/support/updates/

Wouldn't it be great if updating SPSS was so easy!
